Travelling to the Philippines From Europe: Flights, Jet Lag and the First Night

How long the journey takes, where to connect, why to spend the first night near the airport and how to beat jet lag on a trip from Europe.

From Europe, the Philippines feels far away, and it is: there are no direct flights from most European cities, and the journey usually takes 15 to 20 hours door to door. With a little planning, the long journey becomes the easy part.

Flights

  • Most travellers fly via a hub in the Middle East or Asia, such as Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Singapore or Hong Kong.
  • Most international flights land in Manila. Some also land in Cebu, which is closer to Bohol, Siquijor and Siargao.
  • Look at the arrival time before the price. Landing in the evening means a night near the airport, which is often the best plan anyway.

The first night

Do not try to connect an international flight to a domestic flight on the same day. Delays are common, and a missed connection costs a day of your trip. Spend the first night in Manila or Cebu and take the first domestic flight the next morning. Morning flights are the most likely to leave on time.

Jet lag

The Philippines is 6 to 7 hours ahead of Central Europe, depending on the season. Most travellers feel it for two or three days. Plan an easy first island, with a beach and nothing to do, and save the long boat days and early starts for later in the trip.

Before you fly

  • Check the entry rules for your passport. Most European nationalities can enter visa-free for a short stay, but rules change, so always check before booking.
  • Register on eTravel, the official arrival form, within 72 hours before landing. It is free on the official site.
  • Pack light: domestic flights often allow only 7 kg in the cabin, with checked bags paid separately.

The best months from Europe

December to May is the dry season and the best time for most of the islands. It is also when Europe is coldest, which makes the Philippines a perfect winter escape. Book 3 to 4 months ahead, and earlier for Christmas, New Year and Easter.

How we help

We plan the domestic part around your international flights, arrange a driver to meet you on arrival, and keep a buffer where the sea or the weather could change things. You just need to land.
