Inside

Camiguin

For a volcanic island you can circle in a morning and a pace that feels decades behind the rest of the country.

Add Camiguin to my journey

Camiguin is about 64 kilometres around, which means you can loop it on a single coastal road in a couple of hours, though it's better done slowly over a day. It was shaped by volcanoes, including Hibok-Hibok, which is still active and last erupted in the early 1950s. An earlier eruption in 1871 sank part of a town; a large white cross in the sea now marks the Sunken Cemetery. In between are waterfalls, cold springs, hot springs, lanzones orchards and a pace of life that hasn't changed much in a long time.

Things to do

Take a boat at dawn to White Island, a bare sandbar a short ride from Mambajao with the volcanoes as a backdrop. Swim at Katibawasan Falls, a tall, thin fall into a cold pool, and walk to Tuasan Falls. Soak in Ardent Hot Springs in the evening, and visit the Sunken Cemetery at sunset. Experienced hikers can climb Hibok-Hibok with a registered guide and permit; it's a steep day.

Go at sunrise. The sand has no shade at all by 10am.

Old Guiob Church ruins
Coral-stone walls left after the 1871 eruption, now covered in moss.

Food

Camiguin is known for lanzones, a sweet, translucent fruit celebrated every October with the Lanzones Festival. Also look for pastel, a soft bun filled with custard, which visitors carry home by the box.
